A Student-Led Sustainability Initiative- The students participating in the 'One-Day Caliph' project have started performing their duties

In a bold step toward student empowerment and environmental responsibility, the "One-Day Caliph" project at Azerbaijan University of Languages (ADU) has taken on a new dimension in 2023 with the launch of a student-led sustainability initiative. Held annually, the project allows students to assume the leadership roles of the university administration for one day, encouraging practical engagement in governance, strategic decision-making, and social responsibility. This year’s edition, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of National Leader Heydar Aliyev, placed a strong emphasis on environmental awareness and student-led innovation.
Among the highlights of this year’s program was the formation of a Student Sustainability Society, led by students participating in the project. The society’s purpose is to raise awareness of ecological issues, promote sustainable practices on campus, and contribute to broader climate action goals aligned with national and global frameworks. The initiative was formally introduced by students holding Caliph positions such as Caliph-Rector, Vice-Rectors, and departmental heads.
During their one-day leadership tenure, students organized a dedicated session to present their sustainability action plan, which includes proposals for reducing single-use plastic on campus, enhancing recycling infrastructure, hosting environmental seminars, and incorporating sustainability into university-wide events. The society also announced plans to partner with local and international environmental organizations to further enrich student engagement in sustainability work.
Caliph-Rector Nicat Quluzade, in his remarks during the sustainability session, emphasized the critical role young people must play in addressing environmental challenges. “We must lead by example—not only in education and culture but also in preserving the environment for future generations. This initiative is a message that our students are ready to act,” he stated.
The inclusion of sustainability in the "One-Day Caliph" project reflects ADU’s broader commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 4 (Quality Education). Supported by academician Kamal Abdulla, Rector of ADU, the program continues to serve as a powerful platform for fostering leadership, civic engagement, and a culture of innovation among students.
This student-led sustainability initiative is not just a symbolic gesture but a strategic move to embed environmental consciousness into the university’s educational and administrative fabric. Through initiatives like this, ADU is preparing its students not only to lead but to lead with purpose—conscious of their role in shaping a more sustainable, equitable world.
