Azerbaijan University of Languages (ADU), emphasizing the importance of academic freedom and institutional autonomy, ensures the unrestricted pursuit of scientific inquiry, the free dissemination of research findings, and the prevention of external interference in academic activities. The university's commitment to society and the global academic community is to uphold the integrity and quality of education and research. These commitments align with the principles of the Magna Charta Universitatum, signed in 1988 in Bologna, Italy, by the rectors of 388 universities. In adherence to these universal principles, ADU's academic staff and administration collectively bear the responsibility of safeguarding freedom of inquiry, thought, and expression.
ADU’s commitment to academic freedom is articulated as follows:
- All members of the university community engaged in knowledge dissemination have the right to academic freedom in teaching within the classroom, conducting research both within and beyond the university, and publishing, discussing, and interpreting research findings without restriction.
- The university administration and faculty members guarantee the protection of every university member’s right to freely express artistic and personal academic opinions.
- The university does not seek to influence or control the personal views or public expressions of any member of the academic community.
- The university respects the freedom of expression and the right to association of its members in their personal and civic capacities.
- Faculty members have the right to employ scientifically grounded teaching methodologies and to independently select instructional materials.
Additionally, the right to academic freedom encompasses the following obligations:
- Upholding ethical responsibilities and professional duties toward both the university community and one's academic discipline.
- Expanding the boundaries of knowledge in teaching and research by maintaining a commitment to excellence and innovation at both the individual and collaborative levels.
- Distinguishing personal responsibilities from institutional commitments and recognizing that publicly expressed opinions do not represent or bind the university in any official capacity.
