COURSE OUTLINE

The course “Habits of pronunciation” is intended for Bachelor second year (B2) students in the English department.

It supplies materials for emphatic intonation practice through the whole course of “Practical Phonetics” and “Communicative Phonetics”.

The subject is essentially practical. The students will acquire correct pronunciation habits of normative English pronunciation. It will help to gain skills and habits on intensive practice in English rhythm, to determine connection existing between this or that intonation contour and between different communicative types of utterances in a more detailed manner, to illustrate the main tendency in the relations between form and function of  English intonation.

The course will help to practice exercises through reading situational dialogues, texts, poems, listen to the records of  English –born speakers and represent normative English pronunciation.

It also includes different intonation patterns, their structure and attitudes expressed by these patterns, as well as pre-recorded samples.

Participations (for synchronous or asynchronous components)

Participation includes logging in to class prepared and on time, taking part in ongoing class discussions, asking questions, contributing the students’ knowledge and insights in whatever form is appropriate, and striving to make all their contributions excellent. It includes doing the required listening and pronunciation for each class. All assignments for this course will be submitted electronically. Assignments will be submitted by the given deadline.

Note: Lateness or late work will hurt the students’ grade because it is an unnecessary interruption and because latecomers are likely to miss valuable information.
