The History of the Department

The department was established in 1959 within the Faculty of European Languages and was originally named "Lexicology of the English Language" until 1993. Following a decision by the university council on February 9, 1994, and an official order dated February 14, 1994, the department was renamed "Lexicology of the English Language and Country Studies." Subsequently, on December 3, 2013, the Scientific Council of AUL resolved to change the department's name to "Linguoculturology," as formalized by the rector's order No. 1/318. Currently, the Linguoculturology Department operates under the Faculty of English and French Languages, with PhD Associate Professor Vusala Elkhan Aghabayli serving as its head.

 

The Mission of the Department

·        To ensure the training of highly qualified and competitive specialists in languages and intercultural communication, addressing the growing demand for language mediation in the labor market and society in a globalized world characterized by dynamic economic, political, and cultural relations.

·        To focus on educating teachers with profound knowledge and professional competencies in foreign language (English) teaching and preparing scientific personnel specializing in sociolinguistic and sociocultural issues.

 

The Goals of the Department

·        To cultivate specialists who preserve and promote national, spiritual, and universal values, possess a broad worldview, evaluate innovations, acquire both theoretical and practical knowledge, and demonstrate modern, competitive thinking.

·        To ensure the acquisition of systematic knowledge, skills, and competencies, equipping students for active public life and effective professional engagement.

·        To prepare individuals who can secure their rightful place in the contemporary labor market.

 

The Aims and Objectives of the Department

·        To foster innovation within the department and actively enhance the academic potential of its faculty members.

·        To collaborate with schools in regional areas to establish innovative educational environments.

·        To develop mutual relationships with various departments of international and regional higher education institutions.

·        To assist in the creation of modern curricula that incorporate global educational trends and align with the principles of the Bologna Process.

·        To contribute to the training of specialists and scientific-pedagogical staff in line with current global trends and to support the inclusion of new specialties in the university’s admission plan.

·        To train specialists who fulfill the needs of employers while aligning with the developmental priorities of regional, national, and international labor markets.

·        To prepare professionals capable of driving the expansion of innovation infrastructure.

 

The Activities of the Department

The Department of Linguoculturology engages in a diverse range of activities. It oversees the teaching process at both undergraduate and graduate levels, offering courses such as Country Studies, Linguo-Country Studies, Language Skills, Academic Writing and Reading, along with various elective courses.

As a department situated at the intersection of language and culture, it reflects the dynamics of modern society and the increasing importance of intercultural interactions. This approach not only promotes positive collaboration but also facilitates intercultural integration. In this regard, university graduates are expected to gain familiarity with the universal aspects of global culture while fostering tolerance and respect for other national cultures. The teaching of foreign languages within the department emphasizes the development of communicative and linguocultural competencies, which include a thorough understanding of world culture and the cultural underpinnings of social events and traditions.

The faculty members play an active role in the academic process by preparing program schedules, course syllabi, and supervising master’s theses. They provide consultation hours throughout the academic year and prior to examinations, encourage student participation in the Student Scientific Society (SSS), and offer guidance on their research and projects.

Additionally, the department reviews dissertations, textbooks, teaching materials, and scientific articles submitted from within the university and other higher education institutions, providing critical feedback and evaluations. It supervises doctoral and postgraduate students, conducting discussions on their dissertations and guiding their academic progress. Faculty members contribute significantly to organizing scientific conferences and seminars, frequently presenting their research findings.

Demonstrative lessons are organized for the courses taught in the department, with a focus on methodological analysis. Regular training sessions are conducted for young educators, ensuring their participation in webinars, workshops, and training sessions led by invited experts from abroad. Department and section meetings are held regularly to ensure smooth operations and academic excellence.
