21 july, 2017
Dr. Kamal Abdulla, Rector of the Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL), met with a special delegation from Israel that included Prof. Brenda Shaffer from Georgetown University, Dr. Avinoam Idan from the University of Haifa, and Mr. Yaron London, a famous Israeli journalist and author. Speaking about the activities of the "Israel and the Middle East Studies Center" at AUL, Dr. Abdulla said that the relations between Azerbaijan and the Jewish people are very interesting and rich. According to him, among the representatives of the Jewish community living in Azerbaijan, there are people who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and have been given the "National Hero" award. He added that the friendship between Azerbaijanis and Jews is very strong. Dr. Abdulla said that the Azerbaijani language, as an ecclesiastical language, reflects ancient history and culture, and is an example of the epic “Kitabi Dada Gorgud” (The Book of Dede Korkut). Dr. Abdulla also talked about the phenomenon of Azerbaijan’s multiculturalist environment. In turn, Mr. Yaron London said that he and his wife are visiting Azerbaijan for the first time. He said that both Azerbaijanis and Jews are people famous for their cultures: “I feel like Azerbaijanis are very similar in terms of protecting their culture. Azerbaijan is such a country that we feel like home“. Mr. London then delivered a lecture on “The Revival of the Hebrew language” to AUL students studying in the Israel Studies program. “We must know that language is an indicator of culture. The language and the alphabet of all the nations in the world have been subject to changes during historical processes. Azerbaijani and Israeli people have a language culture based on ancient historical roots. Both nations succeeded in protecting their language during the various invasions in their history”. Mr. London said that the people of Israel had an ancient history of language and that certain changes were made as a result of the invasions and exile they had been exposed to. Afterwards, Mr. London gave detailed information about the formation of the Hebrew language and its historical development stages, as well as the Hebrew alphabet, which is part of the Sami language family, and also the official language of the State of Israel. In the end, Mr. London answered the students’ questions and presented a book titled "The Carnival of the Animals" which was authored by Mr. Yaron London and illustrated by Avner Katz, and published by "Miskal - Yediot Aharonot Books ltd.".
