AUL held an event dedicated to January 20 tragedy

On January 12, organized by the on the initiative of  the Department of Social Sciences  an event dedicated to January 20 tragedy was held at Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL).

Head of the Department of Social Sciences, Associate professor Adalat Abdiyeva  said that January 20 tragedy has an importance role in the history of Azerbaijan.  She noted that Azerbaijan's independence has been achieved at the expense of many sacrifices.

Professor of the above-mentioned department, Mahammad Teymurlu shared his thoughts on the tragedy. Hundreds of innocent people died as a result of the bloody crime, one of the victims of the incident committed by imperialist powers was AUL student U.Bunyadzadeh, professor said. He spoke about student’s participation in the movement and his patriotism. Those who died for the freedom of the country turned bloodiest day into glorious day, M.Teymurlu added.

Then, associate professor of the department Shalala Bagirova brought into the attention that January 20 tragedy is the first peak of the national independence, rebirth day of independence desire of national ideology in Azerbaijan history. She noted that hundreds of innocent people to fight for national independence and territorial integrity had been killed as a result of armed aggression. According to her, national leader Heydar Aliyev expressed strong protest against 20 January tragedy , and accused those who committed it, demanding withdrawal of troops from Baku in the representation of Azerbaijan in Moscow.

Later, senior teacher of the Department Namig Karimov noted that crime committed against the people of Azerbaijan didn’t break determination of our people's struggle for independence. The murder committed by Soviet authorities against the Azerbaijani people strengthened the national liberation movement and the masses of the people joined together, he said. N. Karimov said that the national-liberation movement was one of the factors that accelerated the collapse of the USSR.
