28 May Independence Day event took place at AUL

On May 23, 2025, an event dedicated to the Independence Day on May 28, entitled "The Celebration of Our Independence: History, Identity and Culture", was held at the Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL) on the initiative of the Scientific Library and the Information Service Center. The event, held in the reading room, began with the performance of the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
The purpose of the event was to convey to the university staff and young people the historical significance of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the struggle for independence and the ideology of Azerbaijan.
The welcoming speech was made by the host of the event Elshan Huseynli, who emphasized the importance of the date of May 28 in the history of Azerbaijani statehood. Then a short video, dedicated to the creation of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the formation of state attributes and key figures of the national struggle for independence was shown.
In her speech, the director of the Scientific Library and the Center for Information Services Jamila Aliyeva noted, that the proclamation on May 28, 1918 of the first in the East democratic, legal and secular republic- Azerbaijan Democratic Republic- was an important event in the history of the statehood of our people. She also pointed out, that the ideas of the Republic are still relevant today.
Speeches were made by the head of the Department of Caucasian Studies, Associate Professor Khatira Hajieva, the head of the Department of Regional Studies, Professor Sevdagyul Aliyeva, and the teacher of the Department of Caucasian Studies, Associate Professor Shalala Bagirova. In their speeches, they highlighted the conditions for the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first steps in building the state, and also emphasized the fact that it became the first Muslim state to grant women the right to vote.
Students - Ulker Askerova, Gunay Khanlarova, Zahra Mustafayeva and Kyanan Kerimov - presented reports on our history of independence, the role of national leaders and the ideology of statehood. Their scientific approach and patriotic spirit brought a special atmosphere to the event.
The event was also attended by a delegation from Turkey - 18 representatives of the Youth Center "Hakkari Turkey". In his speech, psychologist Reshit Guldal emphasized the importance of emotional and psychological perception of historical events by young people for the formation of national identity. He noted that the philosophy of "One people - two states" strengthens fraternal ties between the youth of Azerbaijan and Turkey. These words were met by the participants with stormy applause.
At the end of the event, words of gratitude were expressed to the organizers, teachers and students, as well as guests. It is noted that the struggle of the Azerbaijani people for independence should never be forgotten and must necessarily be passed on to future generations.
