Education in the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic

A lecture dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) on the topic “Education in the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic” was held at the Scientific Research Laboratory of Experimental Phonetics and Applied Linguistics of the Azerbaijan University of Languages. The lecture was delivered by employee of the laboratory, doctor of philology, associate professor Galamshah Javadov.

The speaker informed about the great, decisive work of the republic founders who lead Azerbaijan to independence overcoming the difficult period of the ADR, the everyday suffers for the sake of freedom, who sacrificed personal happiness for the wellness of their people.

It was stressed that the founders of the republic did a great job for the sake of the welfare of our people and achieved great success in the field of national education.

“Speaking about the cultural and educational reform in the policy of the Azerbaijan government, first of all, the announcement of the Turkish language as an official language, the foundation of the Baku State University, the measures aimed at raising national cadres, the opening of schools operating in native language, sending Azerbaijani students to European countries, and other measures should be emphasized”, the speaker said.

He noted that the ADR also paid great attention to the preparation and publication of school textbook:

For this purpose a special commission of the Ministry of Education was organized. In 1919 “Turkish alphabet”, “Second Year”, “New School”, “Literature Lessons”, “Reader”, “Turkish Wreath”, “Historical-natural”, “Guide Algebra” textbooks were published. Famous representatives of Azerbaijani education and literature- Huseyn Javid, Mahmud bey Mahmudbayov, Abdulla Shaig, Jamo bey Jabrayilbeyli, Samadagha Agamalioghlu, Farhad Aghazadeh, Agha bey Israfilbeyov, Abdulla bey Afandizadeh and others actively participated in compiling the textbooks”.

G.Heybatov said that there were 11 libraries with over 95000 copies of books in Azerbaijan on the eve of the April occupation. However, due to the complication of the situation in the region in the early 1920s and the occupation of North Azerbaijan by Soviet Russia on April 27, the implementation of numerous measures aimed at the development of public education in the country were failed.
