Why Does Dyslexia in Adults Remain Hidden for Years? – An Expert Explains

12 june, 2026

Although dyslexia is usually associated with childhood, specialists note that some characteristics of this learning difficulty may continue to appear during adolescence and adulthood. Why can dyslexia remain hidden for years? What challenges do adults with dyslexia face in their daily and professional lives? How do modern technologies support them? Samira Hasanova, PhD in Pedagogy and Senior Lecturer at the Psychology and Pedagogy Department of Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL), answered AZERTAC’s questions on the topic.

– Ms. Hasanova, there is a common belief in society that dyslexia manifests itself only during childhood. How accurate is this perception?

– Dyslexia is a learning difficulty that emerges in childhood and is usually observed from the preschool years onward. Significant progress can be achieved through early intervention and quality support. However, dyslexia is not limited to childhood alone. Some of its characteristics may continue to manifest in different forms during adolescence, youth, and adulthood.

– Why does dyslexia often remain “hidden” in adulthood?

– Many individuals manage dyslexia over the years through various adaptation and compensation mechanisms. Spending more time on tasks, taking notes, and using alternative learning methods and technologies are all part of this process. As a result, the difficulties may go unnoticed for a long time and become more apparent only when academic or professional demands increase.

– What are the main challenges adults with dyslexia encounter in everyday life?

– Adults with dyslexia may face a range of challenges in daily life. These difficulties are especially evident when reading long texts, as reading speed may be slower and there may be a need to reread the same material several times. Memorizing new words, terms, and names, following instructions, and completing tasks that involve a sequence of steps can also be difficult. Some individuals find it easier to process information through listening or audio formats rather than reading. If such signs are consistently observed, a professional assessment may be necessary.

– What kinds of difficulties can dyslexia lead to?

– Dyslexia may present different challenges at different stages of life. When it is not recognized during childhood, it can lead to reduced self-confidence, a decline in motivation to learn, and avoidance of academic activities. During adolescence and young adulthood, increasing academic demands, extensive reading materials, and assessment processes may create additional challenges. In adulthood, difficulties are more likely to emerge in professional activities and in the processing and interpretation of information in everyday life. Early intervention significantly reduces these risks.

– How do adults with dyslexia cope with the challenges they face in daily life?

– These individuals often use various adaptation strategies to minimize difficulties in their everyday lives. Such strategies include breaking texts into smaller sections, allocating more time to tasks, taking notes, relying on listening-based learning methods, and using digital tools. However, these methods do not replace professional assessment and specialist support; rather, they help individuals organize their daily activities more effectively.

– How do modern technologies help adults with dyslexia?

– Text-to-speech software, audiobooks, speech synthesis tools, and artificial intelligence–based applications enable adults with dyslexia to access information more comfortably. These technologies do not completely eliminate reading difficulties, but they improve daily functioning and serve as supportive tools in educational and professional settings. At the same time, technological solutions should not be viewed as alternatives to specialist support but rather as complementary resources.

– Can someone who has graduated from university or built a successful career still have dyslexia?

– Dyslexia is not an indicator of intelligence and does not determine a person’s overall potential. Individuals with dyslexia can achieve success in a wide variety of fields. Their accomplishments are closely linked to their adaptation skills, the strategies they employ, the support they receive, and their personal efforts.

– What role do society, educational institutions, and the media play in eliminating stereotypes about dyslexia?

– Society should not view dyslexia as laziness, inattentiveness, or a lack of motivation. Educational institutions need to strengthen awareness initiatives and proper diagnostic mechanisms, while teachers should be better informed about the issue. The media should present the topic based on scientific evidence, using accurate terminology and avoiding the reinforcement of stereotypes. Early intervention, quality support, and an inclusive approach enable individuals with dyslexia to realize their potential in education, professional life, and society.

– What message would you like to give to individuals with dyslexia and their families?

– Dyslexia is not a condition that limits a person’s intellectual abilities. Early diagnosis, timely and high-quality support, and appropriate strategies help reduce its impact. When suitable support mechanisms are in place, individuals with dyslexia can fully realize their potential in education, professional life, and social settings. The primary focus should not be on limitations, but on identifying and developing the individual’s strengths.
