The 34th anniversary of Azerbaijan–China diplomatic relations celebrated at AUL

01 april, 2026

On April 1, an event titled “The 34th Anniversary of the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the People’s Republic of China” was held at Azerbaijan University of Languages. The event was attended by the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Azerbaijan, Lu Mei, the university’s academic staff, and students.

The national anthems of both countries were performed at the beginning of the event.

The Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages, academician Kamal Abdulla, spoke about the development of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and China. It was noted that after gaining independence, one of the first Asian countries to establish diplomatic relations with Azerbaijan was the People’s Republic of China. Since then, friendly relations, as well as cooperation in economic and cultural spheres, have prevailed between the two countries:

“Thirty-four years have passed since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and China. This date reflects a number of achievements. These successes continue to develop in economic, political, scientific, and cultural fields. As of today, AUL’s Azerbaijani Language and Culture Center has begun operating at Huzhou University in China. This is a historic event. I believe our relations will continue to develop further and enter a new stage of growth.

Additionally, the teaching of the Chinese language will be introduced at the school-lyceum complex named after National Hero Mubariz Ibrahimov in Bilasuvar. This stems from the growing interest in the Chinese language, history, and culture.”

The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Lu Mei, delivered a congratulatory speech on the occasion of the 34th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and China. In her remarks, she spoke about the history of diplomatic relations and the dynamics of their development. It was noted that on April 2, 1992, representatives of the governments of China and Azerbaijan signed a joint document in Baku on the establishment of diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level, marking the beginning of a new era in relations between the two countries:

“Over the 34 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, despite the changing international environment, relations between China and Azerbaijan have maintained dynamic development and have become an example of equal and mutually beneficial cooperation between countries of different sizes. In recent years, under the strategic leadership of President Xi Jinping and President Ilham Aliyev, the two countries have established a comprehensive strategic partnership, opening a new historical chapter in bilateral relations.”

Later, Associate Professor of the Department of Regional Studies on Eastern Countries at AUL, Rana Rajabli, and Senior Lecturer Fidan Alasgarova spoke about the historical achievements of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and China.

The event continued with discussions.
