Afgan Ali oghlu Abdullayev

Afgan Ali oghlu Abdullayev – Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Azerbaijan University of Languages (since 19 September 2016), Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, acting Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages (16 December 2016 – 1 June 2017)

Born to a family of the financial expert in the region of Yevlakh in 1956.

Finished the secondary school in the region of Yevlakh in 1973.

Graduated from the Faculty of the English and Azerbaijani Languages of Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages (1973-1978).

In 1978-1981 A.Abdullayev worked as a teacher in the region of Aghsu by the assignment of the Ministry of Education.

In 1984-1988 attended the post-graduate program majoring in “the Germanic Languages” at Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute of Foreign Languages.

In 1988-1992 worked as a lab assistant, a lecturer in the Department of English Grammar, headed the Applied Linguistics Laboratory.

In 1992-1995 at Khazar University English lecturer, an executive assistant to the Rector, Head of the English Department, Dean of the School of Humanities.

In 1995-2003 studied MA program in Higher Education Administration at Duke University (USA), PhD program in Cognitive Linguistics at the University of Minnesota (USA).

Twice (1998, 2005) granted the US State Department Senator Fulbright program  conducting his researches and delivering lectures at Florida International Uniuversity and University of Minnesota.

In 2000 continued his education at Harvard University J.F.Kennedy School of Public Administration.

In 1996 defended his dissertation on “The Textbuilding Characteristics of Actual Division of the Sentence (based on the materials of the English and Azerbaijani languages)” for the Candidate’s Degree at the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

In 1999-2002 studied the Doctoral Program at the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan.

In 2001 defended his doctoral dissertation on “Text, Meaning, and Understanding: Communicative-Cognitive Analysis”.

2003-2014  Dean of the School of English Education of Azerbaijan University of Languages

2014-2016 Department of Accreditation and Recognition of foreign diplomas, the Department of Science, Higher and Secondary Education at the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Author of the following books: “The Actual Division and Text” (Baku, Khazar University Publishing House, 1997), “Text, Meaning, and Understanding A Communicative-cognitive Approach”, (Alpha Print İnc. Minneapolis, USA, 1998), “The Comprehension Models of the Text” (Baku, “Sada”, 1999), “Discourse Analysis and Theme Development” (Berlin, 2003), “The Basics of Cognitive Linguistics”, (Baku, Mutarjim, 2006), “The Actual Division, Text and Discourse” (Baku, Zardabi LTD, 2011).

Member of the Boards of a number of prestigious scientific societies (the American Translators Association, the American International English Teachers Association, The Linguistic Society of Europe, The Cognitive Linguistics Society of Europe,  Memory and Cognitive Development Society of Europe).

Author 6 textbooks (2 of them have been published abroad), and over 110 scientific articles (37 article have been released in prestigious scientific journals).

Received over 23 grants from different international organizations in the USA and Europe.
