A green mission at AUL
The Earth faces the threat of climate change. Today all countries recognize the adverse impact of this on the humanity and the necessity to urge governments to sign a new climate agreement. Thus, each of us has an opportunity to change course.
On June 22nd, 2009 a group of Swiss enthusiasts visited AUL to share their experience of traveling along the Silk Road by motorcycles to witness climate change. Thus, they started up their journey in China. Azerbaijan is the 5th country they visited after Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan and other countries. After Azerbaijan they’re planning to visit Georgia and Turkey as a final destination.
Promoting environmental sustainability along the 16,000 km-long Silk Road between Beijing and Istanbul Clarisse von Wunschheim and Mark Dembitz aim to raise awareness of climate change and inspire people to make a difference. To this end they will cross 8 countries in 80 days.
According to the guest speakers, the current limited success of environment- friendly policies results from a lack of awareness about environmental issues, and the fact that people are not willing to change their lifestyle to reduce their impact on the environment. People are not willing to give up their comfort to stop harming the environment. Thus, in a course of their journey Mark and Clarisse have witnessed waste of water, gas and other resources.
As they believe it’s individuals who should make small changes to their lives and contribute to environment sustainability. These changes can yield a greater result if everyone cares about environment. Thus, our planet needs more than just action by governments and corporations; it needs each of us. These easy but concrete steps can make a big difference. Clean up your area. Plant a tree. Switch off the lights. Take public transportation. Recycle. Re-use. Reduce.
