Mahmud Kashgary’s millennium jubilee observed at AUL
On October 9 2009 there was held a ceremony dedicated to the millennium jubilee of Mahmud Kashgary, founder of Turkic language studies in the world.
Prof. Samad Seyidov, Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL), Member of Parliament and Chairman of Azerbaijani Delegation at the PA CE, Ramiz Esger, professor Baku State University an expert on Turkic languages, translator “Divani-Luğat-it-Turk” in to Azerbaijani and professor-teacher staff of AUL took part in the ceremony.
We must mention that the jubilee was held in the framework of “Year of knowledge” declared in 2008-2009 at AUL.
Speaking at the ceremony Prof. Samad Seyidov, Rector of Azerbaijan University of Languages (AUL), Member of Parliament and Chairman of Azerbaijani Delegation at the PA CE underlined that the ceremony is very important both for professor-teacher staff and for Azerbaijan: “Mahmud Kashgary’s millennium is estimated as a great event at AUL. Because a special attention is always paid to the study of the history, language and culture of Azerbaijan at Azerbaijan University of Languages. It is not casual that of Azerbaijani linguistics department was founded and the studies of the literature o
f Azerbaijan have taken a start at AUL. At the time, summer courses are organized at AUL study of Azerbaijani language. This year 8 American students came especially to AUL to learn Azerbaijani, the history and culture of Azerbaijan”.
Rector S. Seyidov added that history and culture of Azerbaijan were studied one-sided during Russian Empire, but today Azerbaijan is in its golden period because it is able to study and propagate its history, culture, music and literature independently: “AUL has a special role on this issue. We should bring Turkism to the world level”
Ramiz Esger, a professor from Baku State University emphasized the importance of observing the millennium at AUL and delivered gratitude of all experts on Turkic languages. According to his words is the most ancient and the richest work of study of Turkic languages. “It is one of the most grandiose monument of middle Turkic period. The Turkish language, literature, culture, history, geography, national-moral values and traditions have found its reflection in “Divani-Luğat-it-Turk” by M. Kashgary” he went on saying.
Further professor Adil Babayev (Department of Azerbaijani Linguistics) made a speech on the theme “Divani-Luğat-it-Turk and Azerbaijani”, Professor Agida Akhundava (Department of Azerbaijani Linguistics) delivered a speech on “The Turkish ideas put forward in mahmud Kashgary’s Divan” and professor Ikram Gasimov spoke on “The military terminology in Kashgary’s Divani-Lugat-it-Turk”
