Austria
The University works closely with the Austrian Literature Center and the Academic Exchange Service Center of Austria. Professors from various Austrian Universities and other specialists present lectures and participate in workshops at AUL in May and October every year. The Austrian Information Center on Cultural and Economic Issues has been functioning at the University since 2004.
France
The University is working closely with French Embassy in Azerbaijan and the Marc Bloch University of Strasbourg in France . The agreement between the Azerbaijan University of Languages and the Marc Bloch University of Strasbourg, France offers an exchange program for advanced level students of the University at three levels: undergraduate, graduate and doctorate. In February 1998 with the support of the Embassy of France the establishment of an experimental group with a special curriculum was discussed with and approved by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This curriculum was developed between the Marc Bloch University of Strasburg and Azerbaijan University of Languages.
The examination and grading of the group's knowledge and skills is provided jointly by professors from Marc Bloch University and Azerbaijan University of Languages. The dissertations for the acquisition of the doctorate are supervised by professors from both Universities.
Germany
The University is working together with the German Embassy in Azerbaijan , the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service). A language center is established at the German faculty of the University with the help of the German Embassy. Every year, numbers of students and teachers go to Germany to improve German in different universities of Germany in the framework of the DAAD program. Some of them receive full scholarships from various universities.
AUL has successfully completed its partnership program with the University of Bochum . Every year, professors and teachers of Azerbaijan University of Languages visited Bochum University to conduct research on linguistic and methodological problems. An experimental undergraduate group has been established within the framework of the contract with the University of Bochum.
At present AUL has an academic agreement with the Calw University of Germany. The scope of partnership covers exchange of professors and teachers, joint research, joint conferences, symposia etc.
German Academic Exchange Program (DAAD) takes an active part in lessons planning and lessons quality increase in experimental groups being educated on a special curriculum in the German Language faculty of the AUL. This organization also plays a role of mediator and assistant in relations between AUL and different institutions of Germany.
Israel
Azerbaijan University of Languages has established partnership projects with Universities and Academic Schools of Israel . The Program of Middle East and Israeli Studies has been established as a joint effort between the Azerbaijan University of Languages and Israeli academia. The curriculum of the program was developed jointly by highly qualified specialists of the University and well-known experts from various Universities of Israel such Haifa University , Jerusalem University and Tel-Aviv University . Within the framework of the program renowned professors and specialists of Israeli Universities are invited to teach courses, professors and teachers of Azerbaijan University of Languages are sent to trainings and lectures in Israeli Universities as well as successful students of Middle East and Israeli Studies program are selected to continue their studies in Israeli Universities.
Italy
The Department of Italian Language was established at the University with the assistance of the Italian Embassy in Azerbaijan in the years of 2001 and 2002. The Department offers BA and MA in Italian Language. Starting from the academic year 2006-2007, Italian language professors will be sent from Italy to Azerbaijan to teach in the Italian language program. An Italian Cultural Center at AUL is involved in the organization of Italian language and culture related events, conferences, round tables and ceremonies.
Norway
AUL has experience with cooperation with several countries in establishing Regional Studies focusing on different regions around the world, mostly in Europe, but also in America and Asia . One of these Regional Studies Programs at AUL focuses on Norway and Scandinavia . This program has been set up in cooperation with Center for Norwegian Studies Abroad (CNSA) at Agder University College . The goal of this cooperation is to help AUL attain good quality human and study resources, to organize staff exchange between the two participating institutions in order to build local competence for running the program on a permanent basis, to initiate comparative research and development of relevant teaching material and to contribute to the development of the ECTS system at AUL.
AUL is the initiator of research and studies concerning the Scandinavian region. This is the only institution where the Norwegian language is taught as a foreign language. The Center of Scandinavian Studies , which has been opened in the framework of the program, is available not only for the students of the University, but also for public.
Russia
Azerbaijan University of Languages has signed an agreement with Moscow State Linguistics University on the Cooperation between the two Universities. According to the Agreement, the Universities will exchange professors and students, hold academic events, develop joint research etc.
South Korea
The University is cooperating with the educational council of the South Korea . Professors were invited from the South Korea to teach at the Korean faculty of the University. For the first time in the history of the University, some students of the Korean faculty were sent to the South Korea to attend language courses. The Korean Language Center is well equipped with contemporary books, advanced technology, and rich teaching materials and aids.
Spain
According to the Agreement between Azerbaijan University of Languages and the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain, the Spanish Government sends Spanish lectors annually to Azerbaijan University of Languages to teach in the Spanish Department. The lectors are sent by the Spanish Government within the Program of Support of Spanish Lectors in Foreign Universities. The aim of the Program is to support Spanish studies in the Universities contributing to their academic and institutional development and consolidation.
Turkey
AUL has high-level working relations with the Turkish Embassy in Azerbaijan and most of the international students at the University are from Turkey . We have been developed links with Bilkent University , Middle East Technical University in Ankara and Kadir Has University in Istanbul . Azerbaijan University of Languages has closely been working with Turkish Universities to promote faculty and student exchange within various programs.
United Kingdom
The relations with UK are of great importance for AUL. There is a language center at AUL, which was established with the help of the UK Embassy in Azerbaijan , the British Council and businesses representing UK . The University is working closely with the British Council that offers certified courses to the students and teachers of the University. Successful teachers are sent to universities of UK to advance their knowledge of English. In partnership with the University of Winchester and other 4 Universities (2 from Europe and 2 from Azerbaijan ), AUL has been selected a TEMPUS program participant in the area of quality assurance and quality control in the education system.
United States of America
The University is cooperating with advanced Universities of US in various fields. The most important branch of this cooperation is institutional development which includes the preparation of the University for accreditation process, implementation of the new management style, introduction of the performance evaluation procedures, development of the library infrastructure, promotion of the trainings for teachers and other staff etc. The US State Department as well as individual Universities and experts representing the USA closely collaborate with Azerbaijan University of Languages in implementation of the credit system, introduction of innovative teaching methods, holding international conferences concerning the educational issues, promoting exchange of students between the two countries etc.
Azerbaijan University of Languages is closely cooperating with the State University of New York (Cortland), Florida International University and East Tennessee State University . In 2006 AUL signed a dual diploma agreement with State University of New York (Cortland).
In 2006, AUL and SUNY Cortland signed an agreement on establishing a dual degree program in the area of Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language. Students enrolled in the relevant graduate program in AUL have an opportunity to study 1 year at AUL and 1 year at SUNY Cortland and be awarded the degrees from both Universities.
With the support of US State Department , the University has enjoyed the involvement of well-known specialists from US Universities during the period of reforms. These specialists came as Fulbright scholars, English Language fellows and though other programs supported by the US State Department. Besides, grants provided by the Department were used for organizing international events at the University, publishing books and teaching materials as well as developing the library infrastructure.
The University has strong ties with the Open Society Institute . The OSI opened an Internet center at the University. With the help of the OSI, specialists from Canada and the US are invited to teach at the University. Some foreign teachers from the OSI also help teachers of the University implement new methods of teaching English. They often present lectures and hold seminars for teachers and instructors. OSI is also of great help for the Azerbaijan University of Languages in organization and preparation of international conferences. As an example we can mention an international conference named "Academic Writing & Reading in Higher Education Reform in Azerbaijan " held in May 20-21, 2005 in the Azerbaijan University of Languages.
ExxonMobil - the world's leading energy company from US - is actively involved in supporting the reforms taking place at the University during the past years. The grants provided by the company were directed to the publication of the books and dictionaries, inviting specialists in institutional development as well as upgrading of the University's library.
